What does Kita-Kanto mean?

Kita-Kanto means "north" "gate" "east", which means, err...nothing. In feudal times however, there was a checkpoint between the cities of Kyoto and Edo (Tokyo). The area around Kyoto was called "gate west" (Kansai), and around Edo "gate east" (Kanto). Nowadays, the areas are much smaller, and thus we all live in the north of the modern Kanto region. Nearly. Therefore, we are Kita-Kanto.
